Jurnee and Ada Vox have become fan favorites during this season of American Idol. In fact, the final six were all white except for the ethereally blessed Woodward. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan saved her spot after she did not secure the votes from viewers. And she got there no thanks to America itself. Ada Vox is the fierce first drag queen to make it to the top 10 on American Idol. Three blondes got through, including one of niche talent at best. The standouts were Gabby Barrett, a long-haired blonde powerhouse country rocker Dennis Lorenzo, an R&B crooner with a enviable falsetto and beaded cornrows Caleb Lee Hutchinson, an apple-cheeked blonde country boy with a Randy Travis-like bass Michael Woodard, a disquietingly awkward light-skinned African American, who thoroughly transforms into a polished stylist the moment he hears a downbeat Jurnee, a mesmerizingly beautiful velvet-toned pitch-perfect black lesbian whose cornrows frame her in a crown of gold and Ada Vox, a Latina drag queen with a rafter-shaking voice of stratospheric range who is far and away the most formidable talent the show has introduced since Jennifer Hudson, thirteen years ago (Hudson came in eighth, by the way). Something is drastically wrong with ABC’s American Idol reboot, and it’s not its lackluster ratings, or the more philosophical than specific critical abilities of the new trio of judges-Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. ![]()
